Virginia creeper is a vigorous tendril-climbing vine easily reaching about 40-feet tall.
Sucker discs at the end of the tendrils let this rapidly growing plant adhere to almost any surface. If it does not have a surface to climb, it will creep along the ground.
Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers appear in late spring and may last throughout the summer, but they are not very noticeable among this plant’s compound leaves that can grow to be up to 6-inches long. The leaves are a light purple when they emerge in the early spring. Then, they become dull green throughout the warmer months. Once temperatures begin to fall, they turn a vivid purple and crimson red.
Once the flowers disappear, this plant puts on tiny blue-black berries, which the birds love. It can be challenging to see the berries until the leaves start dropping in the late fall.
This plant will grow almost anywhere, which makes it extremely useful in your landscaping.
In addition to climbing practically any surface, it will grow over rock piles, stumps, and other objects. It is an extremely efficient option when fighting soil erosion when left to creep along the ground.
If you are looking for an easy-to-care-for plant, this may be the perfect option for you. Prune it occasionally to keep it the size you want because it will grow up to 50-feet tall and spread to be 10-feet wide. This plant does well in sunny spots, but it will also tolerate some shade. It will grow in almost any soil type if the area drains well.
