The Southern Yellow pine has orange or yellow bark, long needles, and is notably found in the southeastern united states.

It is native to a belt of forests (about 1000 miles long and 5oo miles wide) that start in New Jersey stretching as far west to the eastern edge of Texas and as far south as Florida.

The Mid-Atlantic and Southern United States provide the ideal growing conditions for these trees with their moderate to warm climate and adequate level of humidity.

It grows at a rate of 3 feet per year, and is colloquially known and recognized as the “Ponderosa Pine”.

The four major species of Southern Pine are shortleaf, longleaf, slash, and loblolly (the latter of which produces a thick sap).

The leaves resemble needles in bundles of 2 and 3 mixed together from about 3” to 5” long. They also produce long cones that can grow more than 12” long. Name aside, this tree produces beautiful green needles.

When fully grown, Southern Yellow Pine trees provide beautiful decor to any property or landscape. These trees are an intricate part of Americana because of their distinctive look and the wood they produce has many uses ranging from construction, lumber, and wood pulp. In addition to its durability, these trees are also fire resistant.

Once planted, the trees require virtually no upkeep and manages themselves, requiring little work for the owner.

Ultimately, these trees provide an excellent option for landowners who are looking to brighten up the aesthetic appeal of their property, and their easy upkeep makes them a great background tree. They also provide excellent shade and wind-blocking.
