Scripus Tabermontanii, also known as the Soft Stem Bulrush is a native plant of the U.S. found across much of the eastern and central portions of the nation.
The majority of Soft Stem Bulrush plants are found in wetland regions in the wild and can be used to add visual interest to any pond, lake, or water feature. To survive and become as healthy as possible, the perfect growing conditions for this member of the rhizomatous family are standing water of up to one inch that keeps the soil wet at all times. On average, the Soft Stem Bulrush will grow to around four to five feet when plated in a residential or commercial location. However, if the plant is left in the wild the conditions can affect its growth with some reaching just two feet and others hitting a height of nine feet.
The Soft Stem Bulrush is a popular plant because of its ability to stabilize the soil around any body of water and maintain a healthy stock of fish and amphibians.
When the Soft Stem Bulrush is introduced to the shores of a body of water, the plant can reduce the levels of heavy metals and nitrogen found in the soil and water. When the Soft Stem Bulrush blooms in the middle of the Summer, the orange to brown flowers provides a large amount of food for various wildlife that will add to the diversity of any body of water. The height and ground cover of the Bulrush allows many animals to make their homes on the edges of the water.
