Description
The soft stem bulrush is a great plant for anyone trying to establish a garden around or near water features.
Because this is a plant that is native to the United States, it is found naturally in many watershed areas and does well with other native plants. If you are trying to establish a natural garden or help rebuild any natural water gardens, consider the soft stem bulrush plant for interest, height, color, and as a great foundation.
These are some things to consider when planting the soft stem bulrush plant.
Softstem Bulrush Description
The soft stem bulrush plant is tall, slender, and a distinct blue-green.
You will rarely see a single plant growing, but instead, find it in dense clusters along the edges of bodies of standing water. The plant produces both fruit and flowers, but they are not distinctive or showy.
Hardy Planting Zone of Softstem Bulrush
This plant grows best in hardiness zones 3 to 9, where it is considered native and has also spread to and established itself.
Bloom Season of Softstem Bulrush
The floral clusters found on the soft stem bulrush bloom from July to August. The spiked and spiral shape of the floral clusters means that the bloom occurs over a prolonged period with the first blooms dying off as the final blooms are opening up.
Softstem Bulrush Bloom Color
The florets of the soft stem bulrush are a light brown when closed, and a deep orange to brown when opened.
Softstem Bulrush Height
When the plant is mature it can stand as tall as two to nine feet in height. Height will depend on the quality of the water and soil where it is grown.
Soil Type Preferred
This plant prefers wet, poorly draining soil, and often can grow in standing water with just enough soil to establish itself.
Sun or Shade?
The soft stem bulrush plant prefers sunny conditions for optimal growth.
