Smart weed, or Polygonum, is a plant that you have likely seen before without even realizing it. Smart weed is part of the buckwheat family and is also known as knotweed, knotgrass, or tearthumb. Smart weed is a perennial plant that grows up to 10 to 13 feet tall and if allowed to vine can grow up to 66 feet up into trees. This plant is varied and there are some species that never grow up above 2 inches tall, it really depends on where you plant and what opportunity he plant has, also, if the plant is an erect variety or not. In most cases, the plant is going to average 2 to 6 feet in height in most residential applications. Since they are considered a weed, they are generally not going to get very tall as they are often removed before full maturity. The stems of the smart weed are dark green with red specks and the flowers are small and can be reddish or red spotted. Smart weed has been found in all zones and is fairly invasive.
