River Oats is an ornamental grass with a range of planting zones 3-9.

The bloom season for River Oats runs June through September. It is a beautiful transition during its blooming season. The coloration of the bamboo-like leaves turns a blue-green in spring and an intense deep green by May. They turn a bright yellow-gold in direct sunlight. It weathers the winter a light brown color. It turns gray and does appear relatively poor looking by February. This is the general timeframe to cut it back.

Although River Oats dont flower, it is considered a fruit bearer.

Categorized as a caryopsis, it is a dry, one-seeded fruit that is characterized as grass. It produces a sizeable oat-looking spikelet that hangs and droops off its tiny branches. These seed heads reseed aggressively.

Their height can range from 2 to 4 feet, but they can appear taller due to the branches growing out of the middle and the oat-like seedlings that hang above them.

River oats grass grows best with a lot of moisture. It can be grown in sand, loams, and clay if the soils are kept moist. If planted in direct sunlight, make sure it receives more water.

It is best grown in partial shade. Again, if it is planted in direct sunlight, it will require more water. It has a low tolerance to direct sunlight unless it is receiving water regularly.

River Oats is a perennial grass that is appealing and provides for ground cover to help prevent erosion. It is low maintenance unless planted in direct sunlight. It is enjoyable to watch its seasonal color transitions and, when dried, makes for a filler addition to any arrangement.
