Popular with home gardeners for its quick and dense growth, the River Cane plant has been used away from the river banks where it usually grows and is used in landscaping.
If you are interested in adding River Cane to your yard, you should consider some of the basics about this plant.
The River Cane Plant is super versatile and grows in most areas in the continental USA
Bloom Season of River Cane
The River Cane plant is a perennial but grows year-round in warmer climates. Blooms can appear as early as February, but as late as May. While the blooms are not bright and vibrant, clusters of the plant are distinctive when in bloom.
Bloom Color of River Cane
The thick green stems support the slender inflorescence of blooms that are surrounded by bright green leaves. The branches themselves are, on average, five feet tall, but can grow as high as twenty-five feet tall, and there will still be blooms at the top of the canes. What is most distinct about the River Cane is the texture present on the stems and blooms. The branches are rough to the touch, and the inflorescence has small stubby spikes.
Height at Maturity
Most of these plants cultivated in landscape gardens only grow to around five feet tall, but it is capable of producing as high as twenty-five feet tall.
Soil Type Preferred
River Cane prefers wet soil that is always wet. It is one of the few plants that can thrive in soil that is not well-drained.
Sun or Shade
River Cane grows best in the sun to light shade conditions, with the amount of sun received determining how high the cane grows.
