Privet plants are attractive shrubs that add life to any outdoor residential or commercial space.
The plants develop well in hardiness zones 3-9 and thrive in shade, full sun, or partial shade. If you need more privacy in your yard or want to create a hedge around plants or outdoor furniture, privet is a great choice. These shrubs are ideal for dry climates since they are drought-tolerant. Privet is also resistant to deer, so you can plant them without worrying about deer eating the leaves and seeds.
Privet grows rapidly and is one of the best ways to add a natural border for privacy since it is sound-proof and wind-resistant.
The shrub has yellow or green variegated leaves and can grow up to 15 feet tall, with a spread that is up to 15 feet, although most plants grow to around 12 feet. If you want shorter hedges, trim the privet every few weeks. This shrub has stunning white flowers and black, round berries. Birds and butterflies are attracted to the plant due to the sweet smell of the flowers, which can make your garden an even more inviting space.
Privet shrubs are native to Japan, but some cultivars come from North America and Europe. Certain types of privet, like California privet, grow rapidly and can be hard to control or maintain. North privets grow the fastest of all privet shrubs. North privets grow about 12 feet, but most shrubs are between 8-9 feet. Privet can also be shaped into various shapes to give your yard more curb appeal. Golden privet is known for its bright yellow leaves. These plants thrive in full sun and grow to about 8 feet tall at maturity. Overall, the privet shrub is low maintenance and can grow in several soil conditions.
