The best growing conditions for the American Wintergreen Plant are found in the hardy plant zone 3-9.
It is an evergreen ground cover plant that grows flat on the ground.
There are many common names for it such as the boxberry, spiceberry, deerberry, and groundberry. It is a native plant to eastern North America and is common in the regions that run from the western Netherlands, through southeastern Manitoba, and as far south as Alabama. It is a plant that enjoys the mild temperatures of late spring and early summer. They do well in areas with average to high humidity percentages.
The American Wintergreen Plant bloom time runs through July and August. It has bright and glossy green leaves. It blooms to produce small, white, or soft pink flowers in the summer. When winter arrives, the plant is covered in bright red berries. It is an appealing plant year-round and makes for a nice potted plant gift during the holiday season. When you crush the leaves, they let off a minty aroma.
The height at maturity is around 7 inches. It grows low to the ground and makes for a beautiful ground covering. Although it grows ground level making it easily accessible to insects and bugs, the plant is pest resistant. The American Wintergreen Plant produces oil that works as a pest deterrent.
The plant deters bugs, but the berries are safe for human and animal consumption.
The American Wintergreen Plant thrives in acidic soil with a pH of less than 6.5. It requires low nutrients and good drainage. They do enjoy staying moist and do require extra watering during the berry production season. The plants do not do well in hot dry areas.
Direct sunlight will dry the American Wintergreen Plant out and will require extra watering. It prefers partial shade with light heat. It is a shade-tolerant plant and can grow in areas of dense shade. When it is in a shadier area it tends to produce fewer flowers.
