Description
Ninebarks are woody shrubs that are easy to grow.
The plants have become more popular in recent years because of their beautiful leaf colors and arching branches. Ninebark gets is name from its bark, which peels in nine layers. The leaves fall from the shrub in the winter but the bark is still visually appealing.
Ninebarks grow best in hardiness zone 3-9 and can tolerate winter weather.
The shrubs can grow in several types of soil, including high pH soil, clay soil, low pH soil and alkaline soil. Ninebarks can also withstand hot or warm weather and prefer partial shade or full sun. The plant can thrive in moist soil but is drought tolerant as well. These shrubs are not deer resistant, so be sure to plant them in safe areas. Ninebarks also have the tendency to develop a powder-like mildew, so be sure to tend to these plants often.
There are several appealing cultivars of Ninebark, including Diabolo, which grows up to 10 feet tall. This cultivar has light pink flowers, which are a stunning contrast with the purplish red leaves. You can control the growth of the Diabolo shrub by cutting it every spring.
Center Glow is another attractive cultivar that grows 8 to 10 feet and has vivid red leaves. The flowers are yellowish green, and the leaves turn yellow and red in autumn. You may prefer the Summer Wine, which is a smaller version of Diabolo with the same burgundy leaves. Summer Wine only grows about 6 feet tall and doesn't need to be pruned often. In the middle of summer, the flowers are a pinkish white hue and the leaves turn purple or red during fall. Another compact cultivar is Dart's Gold, which has bright yellow leaves. Dart's Gold is around 5 feet at maturity and has white flowers and red berries, which makes an attractive contract when planted next to Summer Wine.
