Mountain Sedge grows moderately fast

You may have seen it many times before, but most people have no idea what sedge grass is. As it happens, it tends to be a grass native to CA & it grows moderately fast. It tends to be in an upright position & can get up to 1.3 feet tall. It tends to grow most actively during the spring & summer but can also be seen sprouting up during the fall & winter on occasion. As late spring starts to set in, it can often bloom flowers that are purple & it has leaves that are bright green. It does shed its leaves annually, so you know when fall is about to begin. It tends to be an invasive type of grass, but it shouldn't be much of an issue as long as you mow regularly. It tends to be found in warmer climates, but some can be found in colder parts, though it is not reasonably expected.

Mountain Sedge has been used as a food source for many animals

They usually grow in wetter climates but also have been found in places that are a bit warmer. If there is an elevation anywhere between 6,900 & 10,6000 feet, you will usually find sedge grass which makes sense based on the name. It often grows in soil that is adaptable & tolerable, but it can also grow in either loam or clay. The good news is if you need help to control it, many animals eat this grass to help keep it from getting too tall. That tends to include sparrows & sandpipers as well as wild turkeys, ducks & grouse. Mountain sedge has been used as a food source for many insects like caterpillars & some smaller mammals out there. So if you want to keep it from invading, try bringing in some animals.
