This plant is also classified as a perennial and is unknown if there are any medical, edible, or herbal uses at this time. It will be able to grow up to 3 feet in height, and approximately 1 foot in width spread. It will thrive in full sunlight with moist to dry soil, and is deer resistant. It will do well in lightly textured soil conditions, and grow best in zones 5 through 10. It is, however, readily adaptable, and will grow great in natural settings such as lakes, streams, and riverbanks. For the best conditions, this plant likes to have roots submerged in water, and a lot of sun. It will be an attractive light to medium green color with brown seed capsules atop the stem. This sedge can grow in clusters or clumps. It will have a bloom time from May through September, with a bloom ranging from green to brown in color. It is an excellent species for sedge meadow restoration and is most common south of the Missouri River. It can also be found in northwestern Missouri as well. This plant will also grow in marshes, upland prairies, and pond margins. Prevention of soil erosion is one use for this plant around areas such as lakes, or ponds.
