Dogwood trees are beautiful additions to your landscape
This variety is exceptionally hardy but is known for its incredible beauty. The Cornus kousa, known as the 'Kousa Dogwood' and as the 'Japanese Dogwood,' provides visual pleasures throughout each season. During the spring season, the Kousa bursts into bloom by an array of star-like flowers though these are not flowers at all but leaves that have transformed in color. This tree variety is a great reward during the summer season because of the shade realized by the great canopy comprised of layered branches. During the fall season, the leaves transform into a breathtaking red color. During the winter season, a tree is an object of interest within your landscape as its textured bark and branches formations are quite the accent.
The Kousa also produces beautiful pink-to-red ornamental fruits that resemble berries and that are a delight to songbirds
Adding this tree to your landscape as a central focal point of your garden design will undoubtedly reward you with endless hours of viewing pleasure.
The Kousa is not very tolerant of drought as it requires a ring of mulch to be applied within the first few years, especially. Maintaining the mulch ring season after season at the tree's base to retain the necessary moisture levels required will assure years of strong growth and fantastic splendor. For best results, the mulch ring should be 3' wide around the tree's base, making sure not to mound the mulch against the tree trunk at the bottom. This tree's fruit is also consumable, touted by Asian gardeners as being rich in calcium and antioxidants. This Asian variety remains a favorite selection by gardeners everywhere who have the appropriate growing environment.
