Hydrangea shrubs are deciduous and grow well in zones 3 to 9.
It is best to plant these after the last spring frost or in fall before the first frost. This shrub blooms in orb-shaped flower clusters in the summer and fall. The flower clusters can come in a variety of colors, including blues, greens, pinks, purples, reds, and whites. These blooms are excellent butterfly attractants.
Hydrangea shrubs can grow up to 15 feet tall and should be planted 3 to 10 feet away from other plants, as the shrub will grow to fill the space within a year.
Well-draining soils with a mixture of compost are best for these shrubs that prefer a richer, more fertile planting ground.
Partial sun is needed for the plant, and for optimum placement, it is recommended to plant it in a location with full morning sun and shade in the afternoon to protect it from the heat of the day. In the first two years of growth and during drought, hydrangea shrubs should be watered deeply three times a week to promote root growth. During summertime, it is best to water the shrubs in the morning to prepare it for the day's heat. Consistent moisture will help prevent the leaves and flowers from wilting. The addition of high-quality mulch spread evenly under the shrub will also help avoid moister loss. In the fall, cover plants with about 18 inches of pine needle, bark mulch, or straw. A hydrangea shrub does not require too much pruning, only to trim away any dead wood in the fall and winter.
