How Enriched Potting Soil Makes Plants Thrive

Planting soil for all your planting needs

Nearly any plant or gardening article you read finishes with advice about making sure you only use a great potting mix. While solid advice, do you wonder how exactly enriched potting soil makes plants thrive?

First of all, an effectively enriched potting soil is going to have more nutrients than unamended soil. As such, enriched potting soil can potentially sustain younger seedlings without the need for extra fertilizer.

Secondly, enriched potting soil is typically free of insect pests and diseases. This helps protect your young plants and their health.

Third, the right enriched potting soil isn't as compacted as most ground soils are. Many enriched potting soils feature combinations of both organic and inorganic materials. Organic materials, such as peat moss and bark, share similarities to inorganic materials, such as perlite or vermiculite.

These similarities include being able to help the soil aerated

Air pockets let tender roots grow faster. They also let the potting medium retain moisture without getting soggy.

This space isn't just a valuable reservoir of water, as it also holds space for air. Growing roots still have to breathe if they're not going to rot.

Fourth, using an enriched potting soil provides a safe anchorage for roots. The right soil mix settles around the plant roots and supports them in place so that wind doesn't knock over the plant, if outside.

Finally, enriched potting soils can give plants the minerals they need. These usually start with potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. However, many plants also require magnesium, sulfur, calcium, and various trace amounts of many other minerals.

Ground soils can vary wildly based on local terrain and climate, as well as past agricultural or other plantings. They can be lacking in certain areas that enriched potting soil can amend or fix with relative ease, helping your plants grow faster, bigger, and safely.
