Cherokee Sedge

CAREX CHEROKEENSIS - CHEROKEE SEDGE

Cherokee Sedge - Carex Cherokeensis
Cherokee Sedge has small white flowers and deep green leaves. It is drought tolerant but prefers moist soil, and is a very low maintenance plant. It reaches maturity within a year and grows 12-19 inches tall. The Cherokee Sedge blooms in late spring or early summer and does best in full sun exposure. Cherokee Sedge is resistant to insects, disease, foot traffic, and deer that makes it very maintenance free. It can be cut back during the late fall and will re-grow new green leaves in the following spring. It will do best in zones 6 through 9. It will do very well in moist soils but will also grow in dry soils as well.  This plant may grow to reach up to 18 inches in height, and up to the equivalent in width spread. This sedge is native to the southeastern states from Tennesee and southward to the Gulf States. It can tolerate both cold and hot weather, but can become sensitive to too much sun during hot summers in the full sun all day. In these areas, it will be ideal if the area where planted has at least partial shade during the heat of the day. Although, it is a grass it can also be classified as a perennial. It will be lush from spring to summer but will not bloom. It will have long green stems which will look wonderful in areas around ponds, margins of streams, or other natural areas. It does prefer to have organically rich soil that has been amended with compost while planted. Even though, it will do well without regular fertilizing, and you can give it a boost a few weeks after being planted by using a slow release 10-10-10 formula of 1/2 tablespoon per plant. Climate Zone: 6 to 9 Mature Height: 6 to 18 inches Mature Width: up to 6 inches or more Sunlight: Partial Shade to Full Sun Ships As: Bareroot Plant
