Boston Fern
Nephrolepis exaltata, commonly known as the Boston Fern and Sword Fern, is found throughout the world in tropical climates. Typically the Boston Fern is found in areas of high humidity such as swamps and forests throughout Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Preferring soils with high concentrations of nutrients and over 75 percent humidity, this plant is commonly seen indoors as a favorite household plant. Its leaves are up to 250mm long, 150mm wide, the Boston Fern got its name when discovered in a shipment of goods between Philadelphia and Boston right before the turn of the 20th century. This fern can go by it's common names of Boston fern, Sword fern, Fishbone fern and the Wild Boston fern. It is a tropical plant that prefers to grow in USDA Climate Zones nine through eleven. Of the ferns, it is one of the most drought tolerant, although it does prefer damp conditions. Ferns do not prefer the sun are prefer to grow in the shade or the diluted sun. They have a mature size of six inches to a foot in height and size of six inches to a foot in width. Being a compact plant they are perfect for landscape or indoor plants ideal for placing in indoor hanging baskets or small pots. They are also excellent filters of air born toxins and pollutants so they will freshen up the air inside your home. It is a non-toxic fern which makes it perfect for cat or other animal lovers. Planted outside the frost will not kill this plant but it will die back and appear dead, but will regrow in the spring. It makes an excellent border plant or an edge to a pleasant garden walkway.
