Sanguinaria Canadensis - Blood Root

Blood Root- Sanguinaria

Blood Roots is a flowering plant that is seen in the eastern areas of North America. The plant grows to about 19 inches. When the plant begins to flower, the basal leaves can have up to nine lobes, making them among the largest leaves compared to similar plants. Flowers on the plant will bloom in the spring and early summer before going dormant until the following year. Blood Roots has a single leaf that envelopes the flower, and they each rise from separate stems. These beautiful plants have clear, white, multi-petaled blossoms that sometimes open before the leaf has had a chance fully to unwrap. They can grow to reach approximately 12-14 inches.
Blood Roots is an herb that is golden orange center with roots and stems containing a reddish-orange liquid. Also used for medicinal purposes that are skin related. This flower is delicate and grows during the spring, typically during March and April. It only blooms for a short period. Native Americans had many uses for the reddish-orange juice from this plant, such as a dye use on baskets, like war paint, and to color clothing.
It is used as an insect repellent and has no disease issues. The thickened roots of this plant have the potentiality to be poisonous; however it has been used for its antiseptic and emetic properties because the flower is fragile, it is often passed over in lieu of other, longer-lasting and resilient plants for gardens or landscaping. Unlike many other blooms, this plant is sun shy. It thrives in areas that are well-drained, and have few disturbances. Indian Pink is a lovely flower that will be very vibrant when it is in bloom.
