They are native to China, Korea, and Japan. However, they are popular in almost every part of the world. They bloom in almost every color except blue and white. They are also known for their thick roots. In their roots, they store food and water. They are often called “the perfect perennial.” They bloom in very bright colors and can tolerate drought and can stand different climates. They need little maintaining and tolerate dry soil. To be able to show their bright colors, they need full sunlight. However, the darker colors like red and purple need more shade than sun. They show in spring, but some can take up till the fall. Cultivators have been able to make them grow taller and give the illusion of glitter which they refer to as “diamond dust.” Flowers from certain species of them have been used in Chinese cuisine. They can also be used in hot and sour soup.
The most important part of a daylily is the crown. The crown is where the roots, leaves, and flowers grow. If the crown gets damaged, then parts of the plant will die. Water weekly because too much water will harm them. The only pests that tend to mess with daylilies are cutworms, beetles, wasps, grasshoppers, and deer. It grows from 5 inches to three feet tall depending on the variety purchased. They are a good plant for beginners who forget to water plants and flowers, but they have been called indestructible. To keep the flowers growing healthy, it is good to remove the dead flowers at the end of the day, which is also called dead-heading. Some Chinese traditions have recorded that yellow daylilies also known as golden needles have some health benefits. Some of these benefits include: detoxification and curing insomnia.
