Bluestem Grass is a perennial that grows to about 6 feet in height. Its name comes from the blue or purple color it becomes at maturity. It is drought tolerant but is not shade tolerant. It is very adaptable and does well in many different soil types, but particularly likes moist sandy soils. Big Bluestem is, also known as Turkey Feet, because of the seed shape. This plant will prevent ground cover grasses nearby from getting sunlight. Wetland plants will be very thick and is a lovely grass that will look natural where grown. Birds will be attracted to this plant. This plant likes full sun and well drained soil. It makes it perfect for areas of drought, dry soil, and even erosion. It also is deer, and black walnut tolerant. The purple-red blooms will appear from September to February and will help to give your lawn color in time most plants are dormant. The Big Bluestem has heads of bronze, purple, or green of up to 3 inches long. It will be great around lakes or ponds as natural looking border.
