The autumn fern is a lovely evergreen which develops a beautiful reddish pigment around its leaves. A true team-player, it complements the brighter, more exotic flowers, creating a complex portrait of colors. It is also extremely low-maintenance and has very few problems with insects. The autumn fern is a wonderful addition to any garden. Autumn fern, Copper Shield fern, Japanese Wood fern are some of the names this fern is called as well as a few others. This fern is native to China, Japan and Asia growing in the woodlands and foothills there. It is a temperate to tropical plant growing well in USDA Climate zones five through eleven. This fern prefers damp conditions but can also withstand drier soils. This fern prefers partial to full shade but also will handle morning and evening full sun well. They have a mature size of up too eighteen inches in width and one foot to two feet in height. This fern has copper to green fronds that are a welcome change in a lot of landscaping and garden applications from the regular green and brown colors.
