Adam & Eve Orchid grow to a height of approximately 12 to 24 inches

Adam and Eve Orchid - Aplectrum hyemale

This wildflower is a perennial that will regrow year after year. It will grow to a height of approximately 12 to 24 inches. Blooms appear in mid-spring to early summer and represent various colors from lilac to violet to light yellow to tan, cream, and white, some with magenta markings. The plant's single stem produces 7 to 15 three-lobed flowers along with elliptical leaves that first appear in November, months before flowering occurs. Each blossom measures about one inch across from tip to tip.

When planting the Adam and Eve orchid in your garden, you should place the plants approximately 15 to 18 inches apart. The Adam and Eve orchid does best in areas with moist soil and needs to be watered regularly but not overwatered. Because the flowers of this plant don't produce nectar, it's a good choice if you want a flowering shrub that does not attract bees.

Adam & Eve Orchid grows best in zones 3 through 7

This plant does best in partial to full shade and can survive in USDA zones 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, and 7b. Soil should be neutral, mildly alkaline, or mildly acidic. As a wildflower, it often grows in wooded areas, particularly near streams and at the bottom of ravines. The routing system of this wildflower spreads to form large colonies.

Also called putty root because of a clay-like substance produced by the roots, you can find the Adam and Eve orchid throughout the United States and Canada. It's especially prevalent in the Appalachians, Ohio Valley, Mississippi Valley, and Great Lakes. While the plant is not considered endangered, it is relatively rare in the areas where it appears and can sometimes be hard to spot because of its coloring, which is less showy than other orchids.
